But rain this week has caused delayed and grape grower and winemaker Luca Ferraro is concerned by the abundant rainfall.
He writes today on the Bele Casel Facebook:
- This rain is swelling up the berries and filling them with water.
The skins of the grapes are particularly thin and as a result, they are susceptible to fungal diseases.
I believe we’re going to begin picking again this weekend.
But first we’ll wait and check the sugar and acidity levels of the must to make sure that we’ve achieved the ripening we want.
Luckily for us, the hillside absorbs less rain thanks to the incline. The water flows down toward the valley floor. And again, the hillside helps to increase quality.
