This week, the Consorzio di Tutela del Prosecco DOC(G) has appointed the first Prosecco policeman: Andrea Battistella, age 28, has been given a mandate as a “public safety agent” to monitor the service of Prosecco in Italian bars (cafés) and restaurants.
Among his duties, he will fine operators for pouring Prosecco DOC from a spigot or caraffe. The fines range, according to a report this week in the Messaggero Veneto, from €2,000-20,000.
He will report to Italy’s Ispettorato centrale della tutela della qualità e repressione frodi dei prodotti agro-alimentari (Central Inspectorate for the Monitoring of Quality and the Repression of Consumer Fraud in Agricultural Food Products).
